KATA TJUTA WALKS
Unique place in Kata Tjuta inhabited by a people with ancestral rites hosting 2 trails: Walpa Gorge and Valley of the Winds
There are two possible itineraries in Kata Tjuta to really immerse yourself in this unique place, inhabited by a people with ancestral rites. Alarm telephones are installed on both routes. On the first kilometer, you'll find a lot of people with tourist buses, but once you've passed this point, you'll feel alone in the world and small in the face of the immensity of the place. Climbing is strictly forbidden. When the flies are out, it can be quite violent; fly repellent creams and nets are on sale (at the risk of spoiling the photos!)
Walpa Gorge. 2.6 km round trip. A short 45-minute walk to discover beautiful scenery and a great view of Mount Olga. The gorge is illuminated by the afternoon sun. As elsewhere in the park, vegetation is abundant, despite the Martian atmosphere of the landscape.
Valley of the Winds. 7.5 km round trip. Allow around 3 hours for this loop through the heart of the massif. Temperatures are often high, sometimes forcing the rangers to close off the site. Although the route is not overly difficult, it's essential to take water with you and to be in good shape. It's possible to make a U-turn at Karu Lookout (45-minute walk in total). For bird lovers, gigantic groups of tiny green and yellow parakeets, budgerigars andzebra finches are frequently seen here.
