On the Burgundy Wine Route, the typical village of Gevrey-Chambertin is the starting point of the " Champs-Élysées de Bourgogne ", with its twenty-six Premiers Crus and nine Grands Crus. With the charm of its old stones and its choice tastings, Gevrey-Chambertin has everything you need for the perfect weekend getaway. Notably on January 25 and 26, when the village will host the unmissable Saint-Vincent Tournante. A true institution, this wine festival, initiated by the Confrérie des Chevaliers du Tastevin in 1938, is a convivial moment that highlights THE Burgundy (and its traditions) and THE Burgundy! To your agendas.
Gevrey-Chambertin, a charming village
Gevrey-Chambertin is a renowned wine village on the Burgundy Wine Route, 10 km from Nuits-Saint-Georges. A proximity celebrated by the marriage of the tourist offices of Gevrey-Chambertin and Nuits-Saint-Georges. It is because these territories are both synonymous with world-famous Grands Crus and because they offer a very rich tourist offer in terms of gastronomy, outdoor activities, heritage, history and culture, that the Gevrey-Chambertin, Nuits Saint Georges, Tourisme brand was born. A destination in its own right for "gourmets, curious contemplatives and sportsmen".
Gevrey-Chambertin, like the typical villages on the coast, has the charm of old stones bathed in sunshine and beautiful buildings. It was the monks of Bèze who, from the 7th century onwards, were at the origin of the development of the vineyards in Gevrey-Chambertin. They are endowed with these lands, originally forested. After clearing them, they import vines from the vicinity of their abbey. Much later, the king's steward, Jobert, bought the vineyard and worked for the fame of this vineyard. As early as the 17th century, this wine acquired great fame. The village produces 9 of the 33 Burgundian Grands Crus and 27 Premiers Crus that you can taste in one of the many cellars or one of the very good restaurants in and around Gevrey. Apart from the vines, nature is very generous where everyone can find happiness according to their tastes and abilities
Between nature and old stones
The nature reserve of La Combe Lavaux, for example, bears witness to this natural wealth. This reserve, located in the communes of Brochon and Gevrey-Chambertin, was created more than 10 years ago and covers 487 ha. La combe is an ancient dry valley, a real paradise for walkers, hikers and climbers. Its two slopes have very different vegetation: southern in the south, alpine and continental in the north. The average temperature is 5°C lower on the north slope, which is more shady and humid. Its plateau is full of natural riches and a marshy area shelters original species: tuberous valerian, rough cress, garlic-ciboulette, and spiked speedwell. During your walk you may come across owls, owls, frogs, deer and especially peregrine falcons.
In the surrounding area, you should not miss the Clos de Vougeot castle, the Mecca of French gastronomy. Majestic, the Château du Clos de Vougeot sits enthroned in the heart of one of the most famous vineyards in the world, the Clos de Vougeot. The castle wasn't always this noble residence. Initially a farm building for the monks of Cîteaux in the 12th century, it was then bought to become the superb monument that we know. It is open to visitors all year round and hosts art and wine-related events. Classified as a historical monument, it is today the headquarters of the brotherhood of the Knights of the Tastevin. In other words, these walls resound with stories, songs and anecdotes of all kinds!
You will have understood it, Gevrey-Chambertin can be enjoyed on more than one level! The village can be discovered and listened to throughout its cultural agenda with the Music Festival in Chambertin every year in September, the meetings in the unusual place of La Karrière, not far away, and, above all, the rotating Saint-Vincent that it will host in 2020. An unmissable regional event!
St. Vincent's Day, a celebration of traditions!
At the beginning of the year 2020, this traditional festival will take place in Gevrey-Chambertin on January 25th and 26th. A small historical point, the Saint-Vincent are relief societies which appeared as early as the Middle Ages, a kind of social security for winegrowers. In Burgundy, each society called confraternity has its statue of Saint Vincent, welcomed in a different family of the village year after year. In 1938, the Brotherhood of the Knights of the Tastevin revived this tradition in the form of a festival that criss-crosses Burgundy from village to village every year.
This is the fifth time that the famous village on the Burgundy Coast has hosted the event. We have to go back to the year 2000 to find traces of this demonstration in Gevrey-Chambertin. For the occasion its winegrowers have prepared several vintages of the 2009, 2013, 2014 and 2017 vintages and the village is decorated in the colours of the Pinot Noir aromas. The concept, simple and effective: stroll, your tasting glass in hand, in the village of Gevrey-Chambertin. In short, taste, savour and above all enjoy! And we cover ourselves well, because generally, at the end of January, Burgundy is cool. But don't worry, the conviviality of the event warms up!
