Gubatsa HILLS
Gubatsa hills with a base of ancient pebble beaches of geological origin with unexpected formations.
If the Mababe depression was a lake, the Savute hills were islands! Indeed, there is evidence that the seven hills of Savute, not far from the edge of the lake, were large rocky islets. Today they rise only about 90 m above the surrounding plain. The attentive traveler will notice that their sides exposed to the prevailing winds are much steeper than their gently sloping western sides. The beating of the waves has given them this shape. We can also observe at their base ancient pebble beaches. The geological origin of these unexpected formations has aroused great curiosity and recent research has shown that they are volcanic rocks, probably born nearly 1,000 million years ago!
When the great lake spread its waters over the surface of present-day Botswana, 2 to 5 million years ago, these hills formed the islands of this inland sea. Today, leopards and orotragues can be seen here.
A short archaeological safari stop will lead to Tsonxchwaa Hill, also called Bushmen Painting Hill. It has some San paintings on its western face. Dating back some 3,000 or 4,000 years, they represent geometric designs or various animals: eland, elephant, black hippotrague, giraffe, striking viper and hippopotamus appear notably on the same panel. However, the paintings are not as beautiful as those at Tsodilo Hills in the Panhandle.
