Al Koot Fort located near Souq Waqif is a military fort built in 1880 by the Ottomans as a police station and then a prison in 1906. It was rebuilt in 1927 after the departure of the Ottomans by Sheikh Abdullah bin Jassim Al Thani, who ruled Qatar from 1913 to 1949. With its sandy-toned Arab fort look and crenellated towers, it stands out in the modern downtown landscape. The fort was later transformed into a museum, now closed, which displayed traditional Qatari handicrafts.
