In Zapotec language, zaachila means "the first daughter of the land". The main attraction of this site, which was probably founded at the same time as Monte Alban by the Zapotecs, is the two tombs, filled with rich offerings, that have been found there. Their construction is reminiscent of the tombs discovered at Monte Alban. The walls of one of the tombs are decorated with carved figures representing different mythological characters.
