KIBIMBA MEMORIAL

Inaugurated in 2000 at the Négoce trading centre in Kibimba, this memorial is located 27 km from Muramvya and 15 km from Gatabo by going to Gitega. It was built in memory of the massacre of about 1993 people committed shortly after the assassination of President Ndadaye in October. On that day, villagers, students and Tutsi teachers from Kibimba Secondary School were regrouped and then locked in a construction station that was embrasa with gasoline and dry straw. Most of those present died burnt alive. In 1997, six persons accused of carrying out this operation were sentenced to death and executed, including the former principal of high school frequented by the victims.
