HERMANNSBURG
Aboriginal community south of Alice Springs to discover the former German Lutheran mission and the work of Albert Namatjira.
It is an Aboriginal community in the southern part of the Northern Territory, 131 km south of Alice Springs, with a population of about 600. A visit to the former German Lutheran mission, founded in 1877 and operating until 1982, will give you an insight into life at the mission. It is also an opportunity to discover the work of Albert Namatjira, who learned to paint with watercolors at the mission. He painted his land from memory and was the first Aboriginal person to receive Australian citizenship. Try the homemade scones with cream and jam.
