Farewell Spit is the main attraction of the area with its 36 km long sandbar and its incredible bird sanctuary. It is also here that each year more than 100 species of birds meet on this spit of land. About 20,000 birds leave in the fall for their annual migration to Siberia and Alaska. A gannet colony of 2,000 has been located at the far end beyond the lighthouse since 1983. Take a look at the photos on display in the house next to the lighthouse.
