DRAMETSE LHAKHANG
Largest Nyingma monastery in Eastern Bhutan, home to the Gomchen people, with many ancient manuscripts and manuals
This is the largest Nyingma monastery in eastern Bhutan. Legend has it that it was founded in 1511 by a nun, the great-granddaughter of the saintly Pema Lingpa (1450-1521). Drametse means "summit without enemy". The nun's brother, Kunga Nyingpo, had a vision of the "Dance of the Drummers of Drametse", a famous Bhutanese choreography known as Drametse Nga Cham, a UNESCO world heritage site. Some 80 gomchens (lay or married monks) live here today. The monastery contains many ancient manuscripts and manuals.
