monastery on a welcoming promontory, particularly renowned in eastern Bhutan every year
A few tens of kilometres from Lhuntse (at the end of a winding but magnificent road), this 16th century monastery set on a promontory welcomes every year a tschechu particularly renowned in eastern Bhutan. It was here that Jigme Namgyal, nicknamed the "black ruler", was born, the founder of the Wangchuck dynasty. You can even see the house where he was born (below the monastery). The place is therefore particularly revered by the Bhutanese. The village owes its name to the fact that it is shaped like a conch shell.
