Dzong perched on a hill overlooking the Drangme Chhu river below, one of Bhutan's most beautiful fortresses
Perched on a hill overlooking the Drangme Chhu River below, it is one of the most beautiful fortresses in Bhutan. It is said to have been built in the 17th century to repel the Tibetan armies. For more than 300 years, the dzong has controlled all of eastern Bhutan and served as a political base camp and administrative headquarters. It was damaged by the 2009 earthquake and has now been rebuilt and consolidated in several places. Inside, you will probably come across Himalayan goats and especially seven chapels, including one dedicated to Padmasambhava.
