GROSMONT CASTLE
It's the most ruined castle in the region, but it doesn't lack elegance and attractiveness! They can be reached by a small wooden bridge erected above dry moat. Built by William Fitz-Osbern, also a manufacturer of the Castle of Chepstow, his appearance is different from the two other fortresses because his function was not only defensive: the original building dating from 1110 looked rather like a manor house; it was also used as an administrative centre. Following successive battles against the Welsh, defensive structures were added from 1142 to protect the building. It was under the reign of Henri II that he took this definitive fortress look that we see today.
