LINCOLN CASTLE
Built by William the Conqueror 900 years ago, the site had previously been occupied by the Romans. It served as a bastion to establish Norman authority in the north of the country. From the beginning, it housed a number of prisoners, before quickly becoming a full-fledged prison. Today, we can see stones commemorating the suicides of wives of prisoners, as well as the Magna Carta, one of the founding texts of England and human rights, written in 1215. This is the flagship visit to Lincoln and Lincolnshire, with the Cathedral, and all history lovers will certainly be delighted. A calendar of events is in place all year round and can be viewed online.
