Built in the 15th century by Sir Roger de Fiennes, Herstmonceaux Castle is one of the earliest brick castles. It was continually restored until 1708, when its debt-ridden owner sold it for £38,000. Smugglers used the ruin as a hideout for a time, before it was subsequently renovated. Today, it belongs to Queen's University of Canada, and its sumptuous silhouette is perfectly reflected in the lake in the middle of the park. It's a sight not to be missed in fine weather, and a lovely walk.
