PLAOSAN TEMPLE

A superb temple with seated statues of Bodhisattvas and other stupas, set in a beautiful landscape of rice paddies.
Near the village of Bugisan, the Plaosan site, built in the middle of the 9thcentury amidst a beautiful landscape of rice paddies, is as magnificent as it is little-known. A fine example of religious syncretism! Each temple is guarded by two dwarapala or guardians (as at Candi Sawu). Inside, seated statues of Bodhisattvas. On the other side of the entrance, Plason Kidul houses other stupas. Built by Rakai Pikatan at the same time as Prambanan, it displays both Hindu and Buddhist symbols (the Hindu king had a Buddhist wife).
