VILLAGE DE WOLOGAI
A village to visit on Mount Kelimutu, to discover traditional houses, tribal houses and big houses.
The traditional village of Wologai, with its 800-year history, is distinguished by its unique traditional buildings. Before building a house, a special ritual, the "Naka Wisu", is required, involving the sacrifice of a chicken and the nightly cutting of a tree in the forest at midnight, the wood of which serves as the pillar of the house. The architecture of the buildings, with their 4-sloped roofs, is organized in a circle around a central altar, the " Tubu Kanga", the center of offerings and "tandak " dances. It is used for traditional ceremonies, symbolizing the intimacy and unity of the tribe.
Houses are divided into three categories: traditional, tribal and large.
Traditional houses, with their imposing roofs, reflect the status of customary chiefs.
Tribal houses serve as repositories for family objects or relics, while large houses are used for rituals.
The inhabitants, mainly farmers, cultivate tribal lands, with various crops such as rice, corn, sweet potatoes, taro, cassava, coffee and cloves. They live in harmony, supporting each other.
At the entrance to the village, a large banyan tree greets visitors, leading to a peaceful hamlet set in a valley near Mount Lepubangu. The view of the surrounding mountains, traditional roofs and forest is breathtaking. Despite a fire in 2012, the village has rebuilt its houses, still following the " Naka Wisu " ritual.
