MOUNT HEMED

To enjoy the panoramic views, it's essential to visit Bara Mountain with a guide who knows the terrain.
From Petit Bara, it's possible to reach Le Goubet by 4x4 and then on foot, via Mont Hémed, which dominates the surrounding area at an altitude of 1,100 m. Of course, you'll need to be accompanied by a guide who knows the terrain. The weather must be clear to take advantage of the panorama, the main attraction of the walk. You also need to be in good physical condition. The entire length of the Petit Bara can be traversed by 4x4, giving you the opportunity to appreciate this brittle surface and catch a glimpse of wild animals. The trail ends at Ouadjalé. It may be here that your guide will have you bivouac so that you can set off at dawn to climb Mount Hémed on foot. The ascent is not very difficult, as the difference in altitude is only 550 m or so. Of course, it's the heat that's the main difficulty, and it's probably best to avoid the hottest months. From the top of Hémed, on a clear day, there's a superb view of Goubet, at the far end of the Gulf of Tadjourah, and Lake Assal. From Mount Hémed, depending on the time you have available and your guide's advice, you can either turn back towards Ouadjalé, or descend towards Goubet. You'll then reach the Route de l'Unité and the spectacular Dimbya canyon, which descends to the sea. For more information, contact Kamil Le Guide or the Djibouti Tourist Guides Association in Djibouti-Ville. With a minimum of forethought and preparation, and a good guide, this is a great excursion off the beaten track.
