HIKIAU HEIAU
Hikiau Heiau was the scene of many ceremonies in honor of Captain Cook
Most of the heiau (temple) having been destroyed after the abolition of the Hawaiian religion (1819), the Hikiau Heiau is only a set of ruins like all the others... However, one must try to imagine this temple from the time when it was immense and a major place of worship for the inhabitants of the region. Dedicated to the harvest god Lono, it was the scene of many ceremonies in honor of Captain Cook, in 1778, the Hawaiians having believed to see in him the incarnation of their god! The legend says that many human sacrifices took place there.
