KA LAE - SOUTH POINT
Ka Lae is a particularly windy site and conducive to a very good fishing
Driving south on Mamalahoa Highway, turn right onto South Point Road (just past the 70 mile marker) and continue straight. At one point, the road splits in two: take a left and continue to the parking lot. Walk towards the lighthouse, South Point is right behind! This is the southernmost piece of land in the United States! It is also where the first Tahitians who came to Hawaii in 750 A.D. would have landed because it is the closest point in Hawaii to Tahiti; the holes dug in the rock near the shore would have been used to moor their canoes, a necessary safety measure given the strong currents. The convergence of east and west winds makes Ka Lae a particularly windy site (beware of caps!) and conducive to very good fishing (provided you are very careful because of the very uneven terrain). It is not recommended to swim or dive in these waters with very strong currents (even if the locals do it and go up with the help of ladders placed on the cliffs). Along the road, you will notice the multiple windmills, well placed to take advantage of the forces at play in this area, but most of them are now out of service. Finally, the place is ideal for the sunset as well as the sunrise. The waves crashing on the cliffs guarantee the result.
Please note that the parking of South Point is completely free, so let it be known to some ill-intentioned people who still try to charge tourists
