VISITOR INFORMATION STATION
This center, located at an altitude of 2,883 m, has several telescopes for visitors who want to learn about astronomy
Located at an altitude of 2,883 m, this center is an excellent observation point for the sky. Several telescopes are at the disposal of the visitors eager to learn about astronomy. A store sells books, maps and brochures for those who want to go further. Every evening, from 6pm to 10pm, there is a (free) stargazing session, commented by a specialist. You will be asked to turn off your smartphone and not to use flashlights at this time to avoid light pollution. If you break the rule, a park guard will immediately come to you and ask you to turn off your phone or flashlight. It's true that you can't see much to get around... But there are special lights, green lights, which allow you to go to the Visitor's Center toilets for example (Phew). Bring warm clothes.
The center also organizes free trips to the top of Mauna Kea during the weekend. It is not necessary to reserve your place in advance but you must have a 4X4. Tourists then follow the guide's vehicle in a line to the summit. It is also here that it is necessary to stop to acclimatize with the altitude before continuing its road towards the top.
Attention works. Due to work to improve safety and better protect the environment, the opening hours of the center are subject to change. Check directly on the website.
