PUUKOHOLA NATIONAL HISTORIC SITE
The Mailekini Heiau, built in 1550, served as a landmark for navigators.
In 1790, a seer predicted to Kamehameha that if he built a heiau (temple) dedicated to the war god Ku on top of Puukohola Mountain and had his main rival, Keooua Kuahuula, sacrificed there, he would succeed in conquering all the Hawaiian Islands. This prophecy came true in 1810! From the Visitor's Center, you have to walk a little bit before reaching the heiau itself. Also worth seeing: the Mailekini Heiau, which served as a landmark for navigators and which would have been built in 1550.
