LA GARROTXA MUSEUM
The museum houses sculptures by the artists Miquel Blay and Josep Clarà, leading figures of Modernism and Noucentisme.
The Museu de la Garrotxa is located on the3rd floor of an 18th-century neoclassical building known as the Hospici. The different exhibition rooms are devoted to the historical evolution of the area from the end of the 18th century to the middle of the 20th century. Nevertheless, the most important part is the one dedicated to the artistic activity of this period. The visit begins with theEscola Pública de Dibuix (Public School of Drawing), created in 1783 and the oldest in Calalogne, with the theme of the Olot Landscape School, which finds its masters in the painters Joaquim Vayreda and Josep Berga i Boix. In this spirit, there are sculptures by the Olot artists Miquel Blay and Josep Clarà, leading figures of Modernism and Noucentisme. There are also works by Enric Galwey, Joan Llimona, Joan Brull, Joaquim Mir and Ramon Casas, author of the famous and emblematic piece of Catalan art known as La Càrrega (The Charge, 1899), and much more, including an impressive collection of Art Nouveau posters gleaned from competitions held in 1900 and 1901. Since 2017, it also offers various activities for children: a light table to play with shapes and colours, a game to observe and decipher one of the Cigarette Paris posters and a set of sculptures to be built, in the style of Leonci Quera. To be made freely on the occasion of the visit of the museum. A must for Catalan art lovers and for art lovers in general.
