Benedictine Abbey at Kylemore, a former castle with magnificent Victorian gardens, neo-Gothic church and lake.

The monastery, which rises towards Mount Dúchruach, was originally a castle, built in 1867 by Mitchell Henry, an English businessman. He then sold it to the Benedictine nuns, who moved in after the First World War. It became an institution for young girls, who left the premises in 2010. You can visit the restored period rooms and the magnificent Victorian gardens, which have been restored to their former glory (free shuttle bus from April to October). It's also worth taking a stroll down to the lake to discover the neo-Gothic church.

We spent the Saturday morning walking around the place. It was a lovely place and we enjoyed the 2h we spent there. The abbey looks great especially from the bridge. The chapel was in renovation and the garden was okay, but it’s not the proper season I suppose to enjoy a garden. A bit expensive though.

Abadia espectacular en el oeste de Irlanda. Zona del Connemara. Se puede visitar el interior pagando entrada. Paisajes idílico con montañas, cascadas, jardines y lagos

Creepy place. Overpriced. Really, there's no reason to go unless you live there. And very dirty toilets.

No reason to drive out of your way to go here.

Lieu magique.
