KYLEMORE ABBEY AND GARDENS
Benedictine Abbey at Kylemore, a former castle with magnificent Victorian gardens, neo-Gothic church and lake.
The monastery, which rises towards Mount Dúchruach, was originally a castle, built in 1867 by Mitchell Henry, an English businessman. He then sold it to the Benedictine nuns, who moved in after the First World War. It became an institution for young girls, who left the premises in 2010. You can visit the restored period rooms and the magnificent Victorian gardens, which have been restored to their former glory (free shuttle bus from April to October). It's also worth taking a stroll down to the lake to discover the neo-Gothic church.
