SKAGEN MUSEUM (SKAGENS MUSEUM)
Museum designed by architect Ulrik Plesner, with a collection of 1,800 works: paintings, drawings, sculptures...
The city of Skagen occupies an important place in the revival of painting, new artists of the late nineteenth century came to reside in Denmark. They came to find a particular light and new motives: the work of fishermen, nature, the social life of artists ... This corresponds to the naturalist and impressionist movements in France. The museum was founded in 1908 and designed by the architect Ulrik Plesner. Completed in 1928, it was expanded in 1980 and 1990.
In this collection of 1,800 works, paintings, drawings, graphic works, sculptures but also ceramics by Krohg, Michael and Anna Ancher, Cad Locher, Peder Severin Krøyer (including a room devoted to his sketches and studies). All of these artists and their friends can be recognized sitting around a Midsummer fire in 1906 in a large painting by Michael Ancher.
The museum has acquired a painting by the writer Holger Drachmann (he is buried in the dunes in Grenen and you can also visit his house at No. 21 Hans Baghs Vej): Garden in the Storm in Skagen (1902-1905). This playwright was a faithful member of the Skagen painters' circle for whom he posed several times.
A small room is devoted to the paintings Krøyer did in Saint-Malo and Cernay-la-Ville, including the small portrait of the Son of a fisherman from Saint-Malo (1877). Finally, the visit ends with the dining room of the Brøndums Inn and its paintings embedded in the woodwork.
