RÅBJERG MILE
The Skagen dune zone is home to mobile dunes that are constantly changing, advancing by 15 metres a year.
Another example of the combination of the strong southwest wind and the sand in the Skagen area is the Råbjerg Mile dune area, which is now protected. These are mobile dunes: they are constantly changing their appearance. It is really spectacular and you have to go for a walk on the top of the highest one, about 40 m, to apprehend this vast expanse of sand... in the middle of Scandinavia. The dunes continue to metamorphose and to advance of 15 m per year! It has been going on for 300 years. A phenomenon which remains a mystery..
