THREE ISLANDS TOUR
Day tours to visit three sites of interest off Port Blair, including Viper Island, North Bay and Ross Island.
Local travel agencies sell one-day tours to three sites of interest off Port Blair, the "Three Islands Tour. Departures are usually from Phoenix Bay. While the first two stops are of limited interest, Ross Island is worth a visit. You can visit only this one by taking the ferry from Aberdeen Jetty (near the Port Blair Aquarium) at 8:30am, 10:30am, 12:30pm or 2pm. The crossing takes 20 minutes.
Viper Island: this small island west of Port Blair is home to a former prison where political opponents were hanged in total isolation. Today only ruins and the ghosts of the dead remain. The island was named after the Viper III, the ship of Captain Archibald Blair, which sank during its voyage from Calcutta to Andaman.
North Bay : as its name suggests, the bay is located north of Port Blair, opposite Phoenix Bay. It is famous for its beach and its underwater world. You can dive or snorkel from the beach. If you prefer to walk, you can go to the lighthouse of North Bay.
Ross Island: a small island that you can see from Cellular Jail, this is where the British set up their administrative headquarters when they took over Andaman. The ruins of the Victorian style buildings are nibbled by the vegetation which takes back its rights and gives to the place mysterious and enchanting airs. The museum presents old photos of Ross.
