IGLESIA DE SAN MARTÍN DE MONDOÑEDO
Remarkable church with archaic capitals, altar with sculpted bas-reliefs and granite cones on the slate roof
This very old building, built between the 6th and 11th centuries, is famous for its archaic capitals and its altar with bas-reliefs carved in the 9th century. Strange granite cones(almenas) cover the slate roof, to better protect against witches, according to old superstitions. About 1 kilometre from the monastery, don't miss the lagoon, built by the monks in the 16th century, by blocking the waters of several streams of the river Tambre. A beautiful walk in the middle of nature.
