MIRABELLUM - ARCHAEOLOGICAL INTERPRETATION CENTER
The Mirabellum, an archaeological interpretation center to discover Gallo-Roman history.
Since 2019, Le Mirabellum, the archaeological interpretation center of the VIIIth legion camp, and the Mirebellois et Fontenois tourist office, have taken up residence at the Forum, a venue dedicated to the cultural life of the region, with its media library and auditorium. The Mirabellum showcases the area's history, marked by the presence of the 8th Roman legion for over twenty years in the 1st century. At that time, more than 5,000 soldiers were stationed in a 22-hectare fortified camp at Mirebeau-sur-Bèze to quell a rebellion by the local Lingon people. Like many archaeological sites, the camp of the VIIIth Legion was revealed by aerial archaeology in the 1970s, followed by excavations in the 1980s. At the Mirabellum, you can discover several aspects of this history through a contemporary and entertaining museography. The camp and the life of the legionnaire are extensively documented and illustrated, with an animated tour around a model of the Roman camp. The Mirabellum also discusses the profession of archaeologist, and looks back at the excavation campaigns that have left their mark on the memory of the local people. A must-see for Gallo-Roman history enthusiasts and the curious!
This summer, a new escape game will be available on the tour route, and augmented reality headsets developed by a digital design school should enable you to experience the exhibition in a new dimension.
