AUGUST
Boutique-hotel with eponymous restaurant, spa, hammam and outdoor pool in Antwerp
This boutique hotel is housed in a former 16th-century Augustinian convent and its gardens (hence the name). The ashlar walls give it an admirable cachet. The chapel, with its high, ultra-luminous vaults, is now an elegant cocktail bar. The eponymous restaurant has already won Gault & Millau awards. The rooms, all different, some with attics, have been designed with luxury in mind, while favoring warm, natural materials. The spa is also designer, with its ice fountain, sauna, hammam and outdoor pool.

The building and the aesthetics are spectacular, the restaurant is very good but pricy. The rooms are comfortable, allthough a bit warm if you don't want to use the AC during summertime, and bathrooms have lovely amenities from Le Labo. Breakfast is good. Spa area is nice but pricy. Surroundings are very nice and 'off the beaten path' Antwerp... and still close to the city centre.
The big downside of this beautiful hotel is the service. Inexperienced staff, insufficient restaurant staff and no 'real' attention to guests what to expect in such a small-scale luxury hotel.
The latter affects the overall experience and does not justify the rate guests have to pay for their stay nor what they have to pay in the restaurant. Very unfortunate because this hotel deserves better.
