SINT JAKOBSKERK
Church in Brabantine Gothic style with the tomb of Peter Paul Rubens behind the main altar, altars and paintings
In the church of St. James is the tomb of Peter Paul Rubens (decorated with a painting by himself!), behind the main altar. The church was built between 1491 and 1656 in Brabantine Gothic style. Initially a hospital for pilgrims to Santiago de Compostela. The parishioners, from the upper middle class, wanted to build a bell tower higher than the one of the cathedral. But their fortune came to 55 meters! The interior of the church is very rich: marbles, more than twenty altars, paintings by Antwerp masters..
