MARNIXPLAATS
Square surrounded by terraces and cafes, one of the trendy places of Antwerp, houses the statue Schelde Vrij in the center of the traffic circle
This square, at the intersection of eight streets north of the Zuid, has been completely renovated and paved. Surrounded by café terraces, it has become one of Antwerp's trendiest spots. The center of the traffic circle is adorned with a massive statue. This 20-meter-high sculpture, known as "Schelde Vrij" (Free Scheldt), commemorates the 1863 agreement between Belgium and the Netherlands to once again allow free passage of ships to Antwerp. The god Neptune can be seen at the top of the work.
