Europe's first stock exchange, built in Antwerp in 1531, later became an art academy and public library
Antwerp was home to the first purpose-built stock exchange, in 1531. Sir Thomas Gresham, financial advisor to the King of England, visited the site and proposed the construction of a similar building in London (now the London Stock Exchange). The Exchange later became an art academy and the city's first public library. Ravaged by fire in 1858, the building was rebuilt in an opulent neo-Gothic style.
