KONINKLIJKE ACADEMIE VOOR SCHONE KUNSTEN
Academy once a monastery with a beautiful garden and a museum that was built there to preserve a collection of paintings
The Academy was formerly a monastery. Napoleon expelled the monks in 1797 and gave the building to the city on the condition that it would be used as a museum and academy (which had existed since the 17th century). Some remains of the old monastery can still be seen. After the great fire of the 19th century, a museum was built to house the collection of paintings (Museum voor Schone Kunsten) and only the Academy remained where art is still taught. The garden is very beautiful.
