BOERENTOREN
The Peasants' Tower, completed in 1932, is the tallest skyscraper in Antwerp, measuring 97 m in height and with an Art Deco façade
A World War I bomb left a gaping hole. For the 1930 World Fair in Antwerp, it was decided to build the highest skyscraper on the European continent: the Boerentoren (Peasants' Tower). Architects Van Hoenacker, Smolderen and Van Averbeke travelled as far as New York and Chicago to find inspiration and a new technique: building a steel structure with as few support points on the ground as possible in order to erect it higher up. The 97-metre high building with its Art Deco facade, completed in 1932, is the tallest in the city.
