GROENPLAATS
One of the most important squares in Antwerp where you can eat on a terrace or watch street performances, the statue of Rubens in the center
This former square was called Groen Kerhof (or Green Cemetery) in the 18th century, when the Austrian occupiers forbade burials within the city walls but allowed them right here. It's now one of Antwerp's most important squares, where you can enjoy a drink, dine on a terrace or take in a street performance. In the center stands the Rubens statue, which has replaced an enormous crucifix since 1843. To the north is the cathedral and to the east the former Grand Bazaar of 1920, now a hotel and shopping center.
