STADSWAAG
Quiet and polite place that used to be a place with a weigh house and then a jazz and theater club
The square was originally built around a 16th-century weigh house where all goods imported into Antwerp passed through to determine the customs tax. Merchants built their warehouses around it. But as the city expanded, the weighing house was moved outside, and the building burned down in 1873. In the 1960s, artists took over the disused premises as a club for jazz, experimental theater and endless nights, but in the 1990s it was rehabilitated as a quiet, policed square.
