Robert Sweertvaegher set up as a confectioner in 1929. After completing an apprenticeship with a Swiss master chocolatier, he created his first pralines in Ypres, which quickly met with success. In 1933, he opened his own chocolate factory in Ypres, followed by Kortrijk in 1946 and Bruges in 1950. In 1980, his second-in-command, Jan Verougstraete (the "V" in the name), took over the business and opened the Antwerp boutique. Sweertvaegher chocolates continue to make the company famous.
