Beguinage with a large portal founded in the 13th century, representative of the beguine order, one of the most beautiful and largest in Belgium

Classified as a Unesco heritage site, this beguinage is one of the most beautiful in Belgium. It is also one of the largest (about 2 hectares), and the most representative of what was the order of the beguines. It was founded in the 13th century and rebuilt during the 17th and 18th centuries. The hundred or so houses of the beguines and the church of Saint Margaret in baroque style date from this period, and the old infirmary is a vast neo-classical building from the 18th century. Don't miss the monumental entrance gate on the Begijnhofstraat.

Beguinage Anvers
Pas très loin de l’université et de l’église Ste Catherine, ce béguinage est comme tous ceux que j’ai pu visiter un havre de paix dès que vous en avez franchi les portes. Petites rues pavées autour d’un jardin central et petites maisons qui n’abritent plus de béguines aujourd’hui (dévotes vivant en communauté mais sans prononcer de vœux) mais des particuliers.

Très bien conservé, ce béguinage est classé par l'Unesco. Moins connu que celui de Bruges mais tout aussi paisible et agréable.
