TOUR DE L’AUBESPIN ET TOUR SAINT-LOUIS
The Tour de l'Aubespin is the most important vestige of the castle of the Dukes of Burgundy preserved by Buffon during the development of its park in the 18th century. It is located at the northern tip of the site at 40 metres high. If we find the name of "Tour de l'Aubespin" in an archived document from 1354, its construction was probably achieved around 1300 at the time when the dukes of Burgundy reconstructed the entire fortress. The Tour de l'Aubespin was an important aspect of the defensive system of the fortress and a prestigious element for the Dukes of Burgundy. Restored by the architect Viollet-le-Duc at the end of the 19th century, it was one of the first protected monuments in France (1862). The Saint-Louis Tower, probably revamped by Buffon in the 18th century, served as a summer working cabinet for the naturalist and as a library.
