Beguinage with small houses arranged in their alleys, with bread oven, baroque church, hospital and medicinal garden
A beguinage (a UNESCO World Heritage site) with small houses neatly arranged along picturesque alleyways. Like many beguinages, it was built outside the city walls, before Mechelen's expansion came to encompass it. A veritable city within the city, the beguinage featured a bread oven, a Baroque church, a hospital and a medicinal garden. Luc Faydherbe, a master of Flemish Baroque, helped build the church.
