HANSWIJKBASILIEK
Baroque Basilica of Mechelen founded from 1663 to 1681, houses the miraculous statue of the Virgin carried in the procession of Hanswijk
The great baroque basilica of Mechelen, built between 1663 and 1681, deserves to be seen from the front, for its theatrical dimension, and from the botanical garden, where the construction details are clearly visible. Luc Fayd'herbe, a sculptor from Mechelen, drew the plans. We can suspect that he oversized the dome in order to give free rein to his talent. The basilica houses the statue of the Virgin Mary, which is carried in the Hanswijk procession on the Sunday before the Ascension.
