CASTLE OF MONTIGNY-SUR-AUBE & ITS ORCHARDS
Castle with park and conservatory orchards with various old varieties, an audioguide informs about insects
The Château de Montigny-sur-Aube is a perfect example of the French Renaissance style. Built in the Middle Ages, it retains its moat and the famous "red tower", which gives the southern facade of the château its fairytale appearance. A little further on, don't miss the Renaissance chapel, a replica of a chapel in Langres Cathedral. In addition to this architecture, the château boasts a vast park, listed as a Monument Historique since 1961, and home to conservatory orchards and vegetable gardens. In all, more than 350 old varieties grow on 5,244 m² of land. Everything is grown organically: fruit, flowers, vegetables and even 70 varieties of tomato. To encourage natural pollination, beehives have been placed in the center of the orchard, helping the trees to bear fruit in spring. The honey produced is also harvested and sold in the boutique. For a bite to eat, consider the Coffrets fraîcheurs: three small savoury dishes and one sweet, all accompanied by bread and a drink. Of course, everything is concocted from products grown on the estate, so the menu changes from day to day. In 2024, the château opens its season on Saturday May 11 with the sale of plants and seedlings produced by the orchards. In the boutique, you'll find products bearing the organic label and, more recently, the Esprit Parc National de Forêts label, which you can also find online on the farm drive.
