WATERLOO 1815 BATTLEFIELD
The memorial museum in Waterloo, explains in an interactive and immersive way the whole course of Napoleon's war
The 20-hectare memorial is dedicated to the Battle of Waterloo, providing an interactive and immersive account of Napoleon's last war. The historic site is centred around five visitor attractions. Firstly, the museum retraces the events through a narrative scenography (interactive maps, portraits of historical figures, etc.) and period objects (weapons, uniforms, etc.). On display is an incredible 33m2 model containing over 10,000 figures representing the armies on the battlefield. You can also watch a fifteen-minute 3D film recreating the confrontation.
The tour continues in a rotunda dating from 1912 to discover the famous panorama on canvas. Its enormous dimensions are breathtaking: 110 m long and 12 m high! This is also the entrance to the Butte du Lion, with its 226 steps. All you have to do is climb them to admire the famous "morne plaine" from above. The tour ends at the Hougoumont farm, reached by a small shuttle bus, where a multimedia show on the "battle within the battle" is performed.
In high season, the estate comes alive with historical events organized on weekends, public holidays and during school vacations: artillery and cannon firing demonstrations, infantry parades, re-enactments in period costumes... Everything is done to plunge visitors into the heart of the battle.
