BASTIONS OF BINCHE
One of the oldest and most preserved strongholds in Belgium, with 25 towers still standing in Binche
Binche is one of Belgium's oldest (12th century) and best-preserved fortified towns, and also one of its most imposing, with 25 towers still standing! The fortifications were built by Baudouin IV, Count of Hainaut, around 1147. In the 13th century, as the town became more prosperous, the bourgeoisie decided to extend the walls. Its perimeter was now 2,126 meters, with 30 towers and 6 gates! In 1544, Charles V offered the fortified town to his sister Mary of Hungary. The remains of the eponymous palace can still be seen today.
