ART MUSEUM
Museum dedicated to Walloon art and the different artistic currents of the and centuries, designed by Jules Destrée
On December 17, 2022, the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Charleroi took up residence in the former stables of the Defeld barracks, next to the Police Tower. This characterful building has been refurbished and modernized, while retaining its soul. A small part of the museum's collections (135 works out of a total of over 4,000 owned by the city) are on display, while a 400 m² area is devoted to temporary exhibitions. On the first floor, a third-party venue offers opportunities for meetings and gatherings for all publics.
Envisioned by Jules Destrée as early as 1911, the Musée des Beaux-Arts didn't really open to the public until 1980. Dedicated to Walloon art and the various artistic movements of the 19th and 20th centuries, it was housed in the town hall for many years. Featuring local artists such as F. J. Navez, Pierre Paulus and Alphonse Darville, it also showcases works by much more renowned names: René Magritte, Paul Delvaux and Constantin Meunier. Visitors can discover ceramics, furniture and utensils from the 16th to the 19th century. A privileged crossroads for creation, reflection and encounters, the Musée des Beaux-Arts is a major cultural player in the metropolis. It showcases works of local, regional, national and international renown in a showcase now adapted to their preservation. It creates synergies, gives the public the opportunity to interact with works of interest and offers undeniable technological advantages.
