VAN GOGH HOUSE
A house that offers an insight into the daily life of Vincent Van Gogh during his stay in the Borinage from December 1878 to October 1880
La maison du Marais offers you an insight into Vincent Van Gogh's daily life during his stay at Le Borinage from December 1878 to October 1880. It was during this stay that Van Gogh decided to turn to art, began his self-taught learning and developed a series of themes that would accompany him throughout his career: the daily life of workers, peasants and weavers, their modest homes, their working conditions... Rescued from ruin by a group of volunteers and the tourist office between 1972 and 1975, the residence was renovated to welcome visitors in a new setting that includes a reception pavilion and a scenic route. You will find reproductions of period works and documents, facsimiles of the artist's letters, a multilingual audiovisual montage (FR/NL/EN) and a room furnished according to the period, as well as the artist's correspondence.
