ENGLISH PARK
Park with sports and cultural facilities in one of the most beautiful gardens of Wallonia in Enghien
The Enghien park is popular with locals because it has sports facilities (a golf course in particular) and cultural facilities (history of old buildings and pavilions) in one of the most beautiful gardens in Wallonia. A natural setting for many events, people come here to attend concerts, shows and events to discover the site throughout the year.
History. In the 15th century, Pierre de Luxembourg, Lord of Enghien, had the woods surrounding his castle converted into a park. Two hundred years later, the famous Henri IV sold it to the Dukes of Arenberg, the noble family of the time. Thus, Charles of Brussels (also known as Antoine d'Arenberg) transformed the estate into one of the most beautiful masterpieces of its kind on the continent. Although it is full of true splendour, it is nevertheless subject to the ravages of time and will gradually fall back into anonymity. Baron François Empain, an industrialist at the beginning of the 20th century, bought the park and the castle and had a neoclassical mansion built there instead of the orangery. Passionate about works of art, he also decorated the park with numerous bronze and stone statues from France. Finally, the town of Enghien became the owner of the park in 1986 and set up a renovation plan to restore the estate to its former glory. Today, the complex offers 182 hectares of greenery and water bodies, listed as part of the Major Heritage of Wallonia
