MILL-MUSEUM LANCHELEVICI
Museum that offers various temporary exhibitions and presents a collection of about sixty marble sculptures
This municipal museum, housed in the former Palais de Justice in La Louvière, recently renamed the Mill, has a dual purpose. On the one hand, it exhibits the collection of works by Romanian-born Belgian artist Idel Ianchelevici (1990-1994) on the first floor. On the other, it offers a variety of temporary exhibitions on the second floor. The permanent Ianchelevici collection includes some sixty sculptures in marble, stone, bronze and plaster, as well as numerous drawings, enabling visitors to discover the unity of the artist's work, centered on the human figure. There is also a small collection of medals and medallions. Ianchelevici's early modelling, expressionist in the early 1930s, rapidly evolved towards a purification and stylization of form. The artist is also the creator of public monuments, the best-known of which are without doubt Le Plongeur et son arc (The Diver and his Bow) created in 1939 for the International Water Exhibition in Liège, Le Résistant (The Resistance Fighter ) erected in 1954 opposite the Breendonk fort, the Monument Stanley in Kinshasa (Democratic Republic of Congo) and L'Appel (The Call), a monument standing proudly at the entrance to the town near the freeway. The vast halls on the second floor of the museum are reserved for temporary exhibitions and events, with a program centered on contemporary art, multi-disciplinary and varied in theme. In addition to the many exhibitions, the museum offers a wide range of activities, including creative workshops to introduce the youngest visitors to art.
