PHOTOGRAPHIC MUSEUM

Installed since 1987 in a neo-gothic building that once housed a Carmelite convent, the Museum of Photography has gradually established itself as a true reference, and since its expansion in 2008 has become the largest museum of its kind in Europe. Xavier Canonne and his team of enthusiasts host various exhibitions of artists from all over the world, and do not hesitate to sometimes provoke. These exhibitions are rightly a great success. As for the historical space, it is made up of a tour of twelve themed rooms depicting the different eras of photography since its beginnings. On the programme are pictorialists from the beginning of the last century, creative photography from before and after the war with artists such as Émile Chavepeyer or Serge Vandercam, the surrealist period with Marcel Mariën or Marcel Lefrancq, reportage and contemporary creation. On the ground floor, a room presents a collection of cameras from the early days to the most recent. A very "1920s" studio was also recreated. This place is also a documentation centre that brings together nearly 5,000 books and documents on the subject, a library of 13,000 references, 80,000 photos, including more than 800 on permanent display, and three million negatives preserved!
